Blackberry Moon Farm is a small organic farm on south Whidbey Island. It is home to Dave, Molly, Kieran, Emily, Ben, Katherine, Gabriel, Cecilia, Margaret, and Clara – with Grandma and Grandpa right next door. We moved to Whidbey Island from Southeast Alaska in 2001. The name Blackberry Moon is a Choctaw Indian name celebrating our favorite season here, when the blackberries are so ripe and abundant you can smell them in the air, and the children’s fingers seemed permanently stained purple. After years in the temperate rain forest of Southeast Alaska we were lured to Whidbey Island by the blackberry moon . . . the hot sultry days of late summer.
In addition to wild blackberries, we raise Shetland sheep, Nubian goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, a guardian llama and very old apple trees. We live in the original homestead cabin while building our dream log home here on our land. We are very interested in preserving the ancient arts of homesteading including soap making, canning, bread baking, fiber processing, and home dairying. Our animals have been carefully chosen for their ability to produce milk, wool, eggs, meat, and enjoyment. We have always homeschooled and always placed our children at the very center of Blackberry Moon Farm. You will find us at the farmer’s markets, gathering and delivering local farm goods, or picking wild blackberries…
